Farm Animal CPD

The background
To ensure that all farm animal SQPs continue to provide a professional and knowledgeable service in the fight against anthelmintic resistance AMTRA have prepared a new series of compulsory modules that address wormer resistance and parasite control, addressing areas that are now enhanced for newly qualified SQPs in the farm animal exam. The modules are broken down into four different elements and consist of around 4 hours of course content in total. The intention is to enhance the knowledge of wormer resistance for each farm animal SQP and coincides with the recent reclassification of anthelmintic.

Are they Compulsory?
Yes, every farm animal SQP will need to complete the new modules in order to stay registered.

How can I access the new modules?
The new compulsory modules will all be available online through the AMTRA web site. SQPs can access the site www.amtra-academy.org.uk by using their SQP number (starting with a Q) as the user name and password. Module 1 is available now and once complete module 2 follows on. AHDA understands that module 3 should be available by the time you receive this newsletter and module 4 will be available by the end of August at the latest.

Explanation of farm animal compulsory online modules
Module 1 – Introduction to anthelmintic resistance (AR) this is currently on the AMTRA web site and counts for 8 points.

Module 2 – The classes of anthelmintic and resistance (AR) this is currently on the AMTRA web site, and becomes available once module 1 is completed and counts for 8 points.
(Note: – Modules 1 & 2 were undertaken at the AHDA/AMTRA regional CPD events)

Module 3 – Slowing the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) on sheep farms. This is due on the AMTRA web site week beginning August 14th and counts for 8 points.

Module 4 – Liver fluke in sheep and prescribing responsibilities. This is due on the AMTRA web site week by the end of August at the latest and counts for 8 points.

Each module has a video that is monitored to ensure that the whole video is viewed by each SQP before the questions are asked. Each SQP will only be awarded the full 8 points if they watch the whole video and then correctly answer the required amount of questions.

If any SQP has gone online to AMTRA’s VBMS site to do the Elanco modules and has taken part in their online training, this when completed successfully counts for 8 points and counts towards the compulsory elements. Each SQP should be looking for an overall total of 32 points as a minimum to achieve the compulsory element.

Farm Animal CPD Regional Events
Once all 4 modules are available AHDA is looking to arrange a number of workshop type events across the UK. This would enable SQPs to attend and take all four modules together in a group format. AHDA would also encourage companies to arrange similar type events, hosted by an approved AMTRA presenter, e.g. Company Vet, Animal health professional, The Moredun.

How many CPD will be awarded?
The CPD points for these modules are based on 8 points for each module of training undertaken. If all 4 modules are completed there will be 32 points awarded.

What is the time scale to take the new modules?
The current information from AMTRA is that all SQPs must have taken the new modules by September 30th 2017. AHDA are in discussion with AMTRA to see if this deadline might be extended to help ensure that all SQPs have more flexibility to complete the new modules. However, all farm animal SQPs are encouraged to start the process now.

What happens if an SQP fails to complete the new modules?
If a farm animal SQP fails to complete the new modules AMTRA has the authority to remove the farm animal element of that SQPs qualification and they would be prohibited from prescribing farm animal veterinary medicines until they had satisfied AMTRA that they had fulfilled all relevant requirements. AMTRA has no intention to require anyone to sit an exam; it is the CPD that is required.
